Customers at nine bank and building societies will soon be able to pay people using a mobile phone number. A new service called Paym – pronounced "Pay Em" – was unveiled on Monday by the Payments Council. It is the first payment service with the potential to link every current account in the country with a mobile number and is expected to launch in April or May.

The service could be used to split a restaurant bill or repay a friend for a concert ticket without using sort codes and account numbers. Adrian Kamellard, chief executive of the Payments Council, said: "Paym is a mobile update for payments that means you can pay securely using just a mobile number.

Customers will register their mobile phone number and select the current account they want to link to the service.

Those without a smartphone will still be able to register their mobile number and receive payments.

The service will be integrated into an existing banking app as an additional way to pay. Current levels of security will apply and payments will not be possible without the banking app passcode.

Customers will select a contact from their address book on their mobile phone or input a mobile phone number to send money, with a daily limit of around £250.
